In Carlsbad, California, a coastal neighborhood where ocean views can vary greatly from one side of the street to the other, a unique home renovation project took place. The homeowners, who already owned a property across the street, jumped at the opportunity to purchase this new home, which offered expansive ocean views from its deck.
According to interior designer Abbie Naber, the homeowners wanted a one-of-a-kind renovation that would feel both unique and personal. They drew inspiration from Abbie Naber’s own bathroom design, as well as one from a previous project in her portfolio. Abbie Naber aimed to reinterpret those designs and create something fresh and uniquely their own.
The main living area and kitchen initially had a dated, closed-off floor plan, with a large wall dividing the two spaces and obstructing the view. To open up the space, Abbie Naber and her team relocated a structural support beam, allowing them to create a new, more functional kitchen, a dedicated dining area, and a spacious living room.
With the layout resolved, Abbie Naber and her clients focused on the details, making bold choices throughout the renovation. The kitchen island was stained blue, adding an unexpected layer of personality to the space. The burl vanity in the main bathroom was another distinctive choice that became a beautiful focal point.
The renovation hit a snag with the unpredictable amount of time required for the original hardwood flooring to acclimate, cure, and be ready for reinstallation. Abbie Naber explains that refinishing and reinstalling original hardwood comes with variables like changes in humidity and weather, which can impact the curing process. Despite the delays, preserving and restoring the original hardwood was important to the overall character of the home.
Ultimately, the homeowners’ must-haves were unique tile, thoughtful material pairings, and a considered use of color—and Abbie Naber delivered in spades. Rather than letting the enviable setting do all the talking, she created interiors with a point of view of their own. The finished home is layered and personal, with just enough unexpected detail to rival the view outside.
