Enjoyable stuff at Austin nurseries this spring

June 03, 2021

In my mad rush from nursery to nursery this spring, shopping for vegetation to fill holes left by the snowpocalypse, I’ve noticed loads of humorous and crowd pleasing decor. Let me share a few of it with you!

Humor at Barton Springs Nursery

At Barton Springs Nursery, the bed-headed model (final seen within the restroom’s bathtub) was perched in the future atop a tall stool, a shock for the unwary alongside a woodsy path. Howdy there! Carrying her regular “All I Want Is Extra Crops” tee, she cradled a crate of vegetation and appeared as if she may leap down to seek out extra.

Within the present store, which BSN just lately redesigned — go see it! — a light portrait on the wall causes double-takes thanks to fake succulents sprouting from the couple’s faces.

Kicking it at East Austin Succulents

A refrain line of metallic frogs perched amongst frilly euphorbias caught my eye at always-hopping East Austin Succulents. Are they holding out tin cups for ideas or sipping an ice-cold beverage?

Festive decor at Backyard Seventeen

New nursery Backyard Seventeen appears to be like extra attractive than ever with colourful umbrellas and lights, plant murals…

…and vegetation, vegetation, vegetation.

Significantly, it’s like a jungle of their expansive present store.

Even the restroom has a jungly vibe!

Exterior within the plant yard, I used to be smitten with these big metallic orbs. Wouldn’t a few them in several sizes look wonderful in a meadowy sedge garden? Or on a gravel patio with potted vegetation? I lusted however left them for another person.

Magical creature by Ion Artwork

I’ve to share this too, though it’s not at a nursery.

Deer could also be thick in my northwest Austin neighborhood. However they’re tremendous tall at Arbor Stroll purchasing heart. On the southern finish of the retail heart’s parking zone, an enormous metallic deer with flowers tangled in its antlers and twining up a hind leg stands watch, like one thing out of a Miyazaki movie.

It’s known as Deer within the Vines, a sculpture by Ion Artwork, which additionally made the ATX signal at Complete Meals downtown, Kendra Scott’s storefronts, and the jackalope on North Lamar, together with many different iconic items. I really like the deer, though it’s perched on a thin berm in a giant parking zone, which diminishes its influence, swallowed up as it’s by the encircling asphalt. However nonetheless, it’s a whimsical imaginative and prescient of the pure world, and I’m glad for it and lots of different public artworks popping up round city.

In the event you like seeing public artwork too, try my posts about works I’ve seen in Austin and past. And if you realize of any good ones I ought to go see within the Austin space, please let me know!
