Abundance tiled art work close to Deep Eddy Pool welcomes guests

July 22, 2021

Discovering a brand new piece of public artwork at all times brightens my day, and Austin provides increasingly more artworks to its public areas on a regular basis. This tiled arch gateway to newly renovated Eiler’s Park, subsequent to Deep Eddy Pool, went up in 2020. Created by Ryah Christensen and Solar McColgin and titled Abundance, the tile mosaic “performs with the concepts of ‘eyeball moss,’ or ‘spirit lichen’,” in line with Christensen’s webpage, “to create a way that the sculpture is inhabited with the spirit of all those that have cherished and performed on this spot over time – and to have fun the park’s vibrant, enjoyable historical past.”

I had no thought what eyeball moss or spirit lichen could be, so I googled it and suppose it’s a reference to mossy, eyeball creatures within the cult basic movie Labyrinth.

For certain the piece appears to be watching you.

Three irregularly formed blocks lined in colourful tiled eyeballs are positioned close by. Once more, the eyes are watching.

From the playground you get a glimpse of Deep Eddy Pool, the place I spent many a summer time day with my youngsters after they had been little. It’s been ages since I’ve returned, and I felt nostalgic as I leaned on the fence, remembering days passed by. Like Barton Springs Pool, Deep Eddy’s chilly water (66 to 75 °F) is spring-fed and unchlorinated, and the vast majority of the big pool is wading depth, making it kid-friendly. It sits on the sting of Woman Fowl Lake, and you’ll watch by the riverbank timber as paddleboarders and kayakers glide by.

One other, even bigger tiled art work adorns a wall inside Deep Eddy’s gates, and I hope to return and see it someday.
